Overall every character in the book is beautifully written, with a sturdy character base to work from.
On the other hand, Mae is a mystery on her own, but it almost seems like Ben Hale drops her strange angst somewhere in the middle of the story. She is loyal, charismatic, personable, and she’s always sending signals Taryn’s way, but the problem is that he is so socially incompetent and never recognizes them. Of Tarynn’s companions, Liri is the best-written character. He is also able to break into what appears to be an impenetrable fortress, where hundreds and thousands of soldiers are on high alert. More than one instance, Taryn fights a large group of enemies and emerges a winner each time. If there’s a downside to Taryn’s character as written, well it would be that he’s so good at feats of endurance, strength, and fighting.
But in this way, he is almost a refreshing change from the traditional “all-everything” hero. Activities such as camping, cooking, or simple social skills are difficult for him. As fascinating as Taryn is with different weapons and also fighting without any weapons, he is worse in any other area. It’s believed that his parents perished in a shipwreck while sailing to the island of Sri Rosen where Taryn has been taken care of by an old elf swordmaster, Murai. Taryn Elseerian is a half-human half-elf who knows nothing about his family. The Elseerian is woven in a bit of the famous style of Tolkien. The story is filled with action and progresses on steadily, and there are some bits of romance as both Lyrie and Terran have schoolyard crushes on each other- but this novel is more of an adventure type story.
The book kicks off with the ominous death of a hero and the relentless hunt for other would-be influential figureheads. The story follows two characters, Terran, an orphan boy with a wild origin story and Lyrie an elf princess trying to be normal with an affinity for music.
